Arena Season 4: How did you do?

It looks like the economy is beginning to settle down after the initial rush for Season 4 gear. I’m sure there’s a bit of fluctuation left to go before I’d consider the market stable again, so no need to rush getting rid of everything you invested in for the new arena season. You still have time.

I found it interesting that the motes and primals went up quite a bit more percentage-wise than Void Crystals and Greater Planar Essence. I still have a few stacks of Void Crystals to dump and fortunately the prices are still high enough to make a good profit after AH fees. I was a little frantic before Season 4 trying to gather up all the cheap enchanting materials and took about 2k gold in loans from friends. They’re all paid off and I’m sitting at about 2,300 gold and double that in items to sell. It was a success for me and I did well considering it was the first time I’ve taken advantage of the new-area-season inflation.

How did you do with Season 4? Leave a comment and let us know how much profit (or loss, but I sure hope not) you ended up with. We’d love to hear!

I ended up making about 9000g. I sold a lot of large prismatics, cut blue gems and uncut epic gems bought from badges. Great week for me! =)

  2. Kevin Says:

    Awesome job, Gnolie!

  3. Shial Says:

I made 60k in the first two days. I ended completely overdone with the pre-season material stocking, as I still have a half of everything. Anyway, I already have profit, so… who cares? :)

I sold all kinds of leg patches, all kinds of gems and a lot of enchanting regs. Surprisingly, people took the planars out of my hands, those ones didn’t make it to the second day.

  4. Soco Says:

I’ve bought tons of mats for enchantments beforehand, but could only sell 30 Primal Mana. Seems like everyone else on my realm had the same idea.

    Congrats for making 60k ;)

  5. aleyro Says:

dude, 60k is absolutely awesome. :)

i was quite happy with myself for selling 4xnethercobra patches for ~750 each- well over 3k profit for about an hours worth of farming (i farmed the scales, and bought the airs) seemed like a good turnaround :)

  6. Andrew Ferguson Says:

I made probably about 2-3k from spellthreads, with *some* speculating in primal/motes, enchanting fees, and a tiny bit of dabbling in enchanting mats.

  7. keith Says:

Most enchanting mats were a bust. Shards, voids, and dust stayed low.

Planars however, could not sell any faster. I kept raising my price and people just kept buying. Cleared 2k on those alone, with another 5k on nethercobra.

  8. Bluefade Says:

I’ve made about 1.5k so far. Prices were still up this morning but starting to fall. Bought up large prismatics and greater planars weeks ago at dirt cheap prices. Still have about 750g in inventory to sell this weekend.

    Epic flyer, you are mine:)

  9. miyuji Says:

Well i invested about 3k, and brought in about 10k in sales, but that doesnt account for new jc patterns i picked up, not as much sales as i would have liked, but i am on a relatively small server so not sure if that made a difference. primarily invested in items needed to enchant one gear, but seeing the market on primals atm, i wish i had picked up larger stock piles of certain ones.

  10. Donny Says:

    i did fairly poorly.
i bought around 2k worth of large prismatic shards and 500g worth of void crystals

the void crystals on my server have been up from 35g to 50g each but the large prismatic shards went up from 21g to 26g for a few hours on the first day but have been back to normal ever since.

  11. Bieksa Says:

Cleared about 3k. Bought a few stacks of LPS at 19g a pop before S4 was released and then sold ‘em at 35g when S4 was out.

Would have liked to have done more, but I was kind of pressed for time.

  12. Earnest Hussein Dodge Says:

I invested about 500 gold during the weeks coming up to the new season, and made about 3000 gold. I sold mostly primal air, primal life, and mats for various leg patches and theads, and epic gems. I still have about 1500g worth of inventory to sell but I don’t think it should take long.

  13. babyback Says:

made 10k + in the 1st two days (7k profit). Actually managed to sell most of my stuff in those two days.

I stayed away from the LPS / void / arc dust market thinking there was already so much around. Essence was a big seller but most came from gems. I brought uncut gems pre S4 and they sold for more than double. Rubys for 120g, topaz and nightseye for 80-90g.

  14. Eternal N99bie Says:

Well, was away the entire week before the new season started and hadn’t done nearly enough prospecting and farming as I had planned, but the mats I had in stock I put up on the AH and they sold right away. So with minimal time and gold invested I made about 1.5K on cobra scales, voids & primals.

Gems did not really take off on my server,as a matter of fact, they are still dropping in price, so I avoided those.

  15. Marten Says:

Did ok I think, mange to pull in 10k the first day. But I did under stock on a few items sadly. Mostly legpatches, enchating mats, some primals and gems was the ticket.

    Thanks for a great blog!

  16. James Says:

I managed about 15k. As I was away for the start date, I was pretty conservative in putting all my gems up for sale. I basically sold all the LPS, voids, primal earth, essences. A surprising thing was that primal nethers did not sell. The prices for gems has yet to recover on my server and rubies are still selling for 100g.

  17. Sam Says:

I made around 2K selling 2xGolden Spellthread, a few Steady Talasites and a few Glowing Nightseyes.

Invested around 400G for Primal Nether and raw ore+raw gems.

Profit was around 1.6K, which isn’t too bad considering I’m trading casually and doing it just for the fun. On my server, there is a lot of smart traders, so there is not much room for 5-digit profits.

  18. Dodger Says:

This was the most awesome week ever. I turned around more money than in the previous two months. The most surprising winner (to me) was planar essences, which went from 7-9G to 23G for two days. Large prismatics were surprisingly bad, they went from 15G to 21G, i still sold about 80 of them.
The biggest total gain i had on earthstorm and skyfire diamonds. We are on a small backwater server, and even under normal circumstances, there are not more than 5-10 each in the AH. Prices soared from 130G for an earthstorm to up to 299G (i couldn’t belive my eyes when i opened the inbox). I also sold quite a few leg enchants, and primals.

All in all a very satisfying week. I think i can lay back and enjoy the game until WotlK now.
Semi-offtopic: how do you plan on preserving your money into the new expansion? surely the inflation would eat a bit part of it if you don’t invest. but invest in what? i reckon inscription mats might do the trick?

  19. pixellock Says:

I made 15K in the first 8 hours, and wrapped up with just over 20K for the week. I cut my teeth on the S3 event. OK, so actually I missed it almost completely, but saw how others made a gold mine and decided I was going to do the same for S4. I learned some from this blog, and lots from the epic but now defunct elitistjerks.com “Art of Making Gold” thread.

I had a full stack of Golden Spellthreads, almost as many Runic Spellthreads, a stack of Skyfire Diamonds and a few Earthstorms too, a few leg patches, and a few stacks of Primals (Life, Mana, Air). There were a few times here I had the limit of pending sales (55?) in my mailbox and couldn’t even pull the money out fast enough. It was a good problem to have.

I’m sitting on 30k and just about feel ready for WothLK.

  20. Donny Says:

I’d like to correct what i said earlier about doing poorly. i thought the price of Large Prismatic Shards would peak before the second weekend after S4 hit but they didn’t really peak at 35g on Madoran until 2-3 weeks and the price has remained 26g up from 21g ever since.

  21. JoeB Says:

For about 3 months before S4 I started stocking up on primals and cobra scales. By the time S4 hit i had 30 Nethercobra leg armors, 25 nethercleft , 20 Runic spellthread, and a ton of spare primals.
Im sitting pretty with 45k in the bank now.

In 2 weeks I made 35K Profit !!!! I sold out of the nethercobra armors in 6 days.

  22. JSG Says:

I made some money, but there didn’t seem to be a noticable increase in enchanting mats, which I had stocked a lot.

In hindsight, I really wish I had stocked more Primals instead. However, I think the price increase (which still persists) is more attributed to Blizz banning the botters, rather than any market effect. Well, perhaps also because it’s summer and there are fewer people out farming, but at least on my server, someone can make serious money farming.

Me, I hate farming, so I just play the market.

I also made a few silver spellthreads (haven’t purchased my way up to exalted yet, so no gold), made a few hundy on those, but now I have two sitting in my inventory and some jackhole is selling them for hardly any profit. I don’t mind competitors, but stupid competitors really screw the market.

Again, in hindsight, I wish I would have purchased my way up to exalted Aldor before S4 hit, because NOBODY on my server is selling gold spellthread in the AH. I’d be able to make a killing. Now, maybe not so much. Anyone think it would still be worth it?

  23. JSG Says:

BTW, for some reason, on my server the market for primal nether is just garbage. It used to fluctuate between 50-75g (I even sold a few for 100g)… but now there are just SO many, and people are dumping them on the AH.

I’m not even sure if there is any demand for it any longer. But hey, I guess November is a little ways off. I’m just hoping the price picks up. I’m a bad speculator sometimes- I agonize while the price is low, even while I’m stocking up. But then the price goes up and supply is low, and then I get to feel like a genius. But I worry the whole time until that happens.

  24. Rakhman Says:

I made around 4k initially from 20-odd Earthstorm Diamonds I had transmuted in the run up to Season 4. The price had doubled so I actually made a “profit” of 2k.

I then made a further 1k from clearing any primals and especially the Planar Essences I had stocked, which also seemed to rocket up in price.

I’m presuming we’ll need to wait for Season 6 for another repeat; I guess if S5 starts with Wrath then people will still be busy levelling rather than buying enchants for their gear… plus the new top end enchants will require new mats. Which is why I shall be DEing every useless Northrend reward to flog on to powerlevelling enchanters.
