I read that Nihilum got the world-first kill of the Eredar Sisters with 22/25 of their team being Leatherworkers. The reason is not for Drums of War, but for Drums of Battle. The haste rating is a real dps booster and if you have 4 people in a group with drums you can keep the effect up continuously. With the very aggressive enrage timers on Brutallus and the Sisters I expect to see other first tier raiding guilds adopt this strategy. On some high-population servers that might translate to dozens of people leveling LW from 1 to 350 at the same time. This has the potential to drive up prices of all leather.

That is interesting...I'm starting to look at conversions for leatherworking to make some quick gold. I already do some converting of cloths into bandages to make a quick buck.

Roberth, Silver Hand

First off, great idea for a blog, I like what you’ve done so far. I’ve been playing the AH game for years, and while I may not have a nice fancy degree I’d like to think I know a thing or two about making money in WoW.

I noticed in this you recommend investing in some Heavy Knothide Leather for the drums, and while you marked it as high risk, the reasoning behind it is pretty sound. However, buying Heavy Knothide Leather (HKL) can be costly, so I would like to pose to you a way to cut some of the cost, and thus some of the risk here.

Manufacturing Mats

HKL is an often overlooked crafting mat, as only leather workers use it in any great amount, but even if you are not a leatherworker you should be looking at this. Why? There is a great discrepancy on most servers in the price of HKL and Knothide Leather Scraps (KLS). Many people take skinning as a gathering profession without taking leatherworking and just sell the skins at the AH for quick easy gold, but they can only get KLS and sometimes Knothide Leather (KL), they won’t be skinning HKL off mobs.

Leatherworkers can upgrade leather, for Knothide it goes 5 KLS = 1 KL, 5 KL = 1 HKL. This means 25 KLS = 1 HKL, That might look like a lot, but check your AH, you might be surprised. On my main server a stack (20) of KLS can go from anywhere between 50s to 1.25g, where as HKL can fetch upwards of 80g per stack. Let’s say you buy out KLS at an average of 1g a stack, that’s 1g for 4/5 a HKL, or about 1.25g per HKL so a stack of HKL would cost you around 25g. Even if you don’t have a leatherworker friend, or one in your guild, you could easily pay one to convert the scraps to heavy for you and still come out way ahead.

If drums do start being more in demand thanks to the new raid content, the demand for HKL will go up as has been noted in this blog post. Investing in HKL could make you some coin, but if it does then investing in KLS and turning them into HKL would make you even more.
