Buckle up, it’s time to get waisted!

I’ve recently realized that with the BOEification (copyright, me) of Nether Vortices there may be a very real market opportunity in crafted epic belts. It must be noted that with the lifting of attunements in Hyjal and Black Temple, many raiders are adamant on upgrading every possible slot outside of the actual instance in order to counter bad drops and push through content faster. It should also be noted that some of the upgrades to the waist slot over the following crafted BOEs come well into T6 content and therefore these items are often well worth their while.

Now this might require a lot of free cash (1K+) and several relists but could net you a few hundred gold in profit. Be sure to check the AH to see if there is already a crafter on your server participating in this market… if there are too many, your profit might be too small to justify the risk. If not, I would try listing them for 12 hours around about 5 or 6pm server time… this will catch the attention of players getting ready to raid. You might also want to advertise in trade chat that the item has been placed in the AH.

You might want to mention that, at least for tailoring, the patterns for belt of Blasting & Belt of the Long Road are random drops in the TK & SSC instances.

They may be hard to get for the more casual non-raiding players.

Hell, I raid both of those and haven’t gotten either pattern yet :P

Also, I’d love to see an article on turning our excess badges into gold.

It seems, on my server at least, that 15 badges for an epic gem is considerably more profitable than for nether vortices. I’m expecting this to stabilize, but I don’t know how long it will take.

I don’t. Badges are not tradeable and are tied to your character. The only way to acquire them takes considerable time and effort. As a currency, they are simply more valuable to you long-term if they remain badges.

By relative comparison, gold is VERY easy to acquire. I can guarantee you that I can make 4 to 5 times more money sitting in Org on my bank alt than you can running Kara for badges you intend to turn into gold. I would rather read an article that gives me insight into an actual investment opportunity rather than simply directing me to grind something out.

I used to farm and grind stuff out. Then I got smart and started letting others do the trivial and time-consuming work while I made a profit on it.

    sid;

For most players, you’re right. However, for players who’ve got gear thats equivalent or better to badge gear (ie BT/Sunwell raiding) and just have a hundred or two badges stacking up, it’d be nice to know what the most effective way to use those is.

Grinding badges for gold is dumb, but if you’re just getting them free for stuff you’re already doing and have no use for them, might as well do something with them.

Hmm while these patterns are nice, Having limited time myself I dont raid, nor would my wife allow me to sit at the computer for 4-5 hours if I wanted to. I suppose I could get someone to craft these patterns for me but I have found on my server that people gather the mats then hit the trade channel looking for a crafter/jc/enchanter who are willing to work for a tip. The cost of posting is high and the risk is up there too. I would (if I had the pattern) advertise in the trade channel and craft only when i had a buyer.

To andrew: I was wondering, what nether vortexs and epic gems are going for on your server. I personally buy and sell nether vortex’s, generally buy at 175 sell at 250, just have to wait and buy at the low period and sell when the prices go up. But i have yet to get into the epic gem market, or even the gem market itself (although I have bought all the mats to level a jc to 300). how profitable are you? and what are you taking in on a weekly basis?

On another note to the authors of this site, have you all considered creating a forum to let your readers talk about other topics of interest? you might find more ideas to be placed on the main page for the casual viewer!

    Finally some random questions:

    1. What defines a rich wow player? 5k, 10k, 20k, 50k, or 100k in gold? is it a value? or something else?

    2. For the purpose of buying and selling on the ah is it better to be on a small server with less competition or a big server with more economic turnover?

    3. So you have you epic mount, all epic gear and 10k sitting in the bank…. what do you do with it? is their anything you guys would spend the gold on?

    4. I have thought seriously about that guy who payed 25k to get a bear mount…. but i think i would only pay 5k, what everyone’s opinion?

    Firstly, great column.

Something to consider also - in addition to the Nether Vortices being used for the high-level belts, as of patch 2.4.2, the originally unique-equipped one handed blacksmithing weapons are no longer unique (refer to http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/04/28/epic-weaponsmithing-weapons-no-longer-unique/).

This may generate a market for Nether Vortices and Primal Nethers, with some dual-wielding classes (Shaman, Fury Warriors, very cashed up Hunters) opting make a second craftable BoP epic.

I would say that if a player has purchased everything they want to buy and has plenty of gold to buy anything else they MAY want to buy – they are rich. Believe it or not, if you only have one character, this is surprisingly easy and only takes maybe $20k to achieve. If you have more than one character, well, then obviously that’s like $20K per character.

    3. So you have you epic mount, all epic gear and 10k sitting in the bank…. what do you do with it? is their anything you guys would spend the gold on?

Assuming your tradeskills are at 375 and you have acquired all the buyable patterns? There is not much to spend your money on. You can make sure you are always equipped with the best consumables. But otherwise… You Win. You just beat the World of Warcraft. :) But seriously, I think that’s just part of this meta-game. I’m shooting for 100k by the time the expansion rolls out if I don’t get too bored by then.

    2. For the purpose of buying and selling on the ah is it better to be on a small server with less competition or a big server with more economic turnover?

Different opportunities. On a small server, you have a better chance of profiting from item scarcity and it’s easier to control (and set) the market price. Larger servers have economies that trade in larger volume. For example, there may only be a demand of 20 Primal Mana per day on a small server, but 100 Primal Mana per day on a large server. In simplistic terms, if you are able to profit 1g per Primal Mana then you have the potential opportunity to profit 20g on the small server and 100g on the large server.

    4. I have thought seriously about that guy who payed 25k to get a bear mount…. but i think i would only pay 5k, what everyone’s opinion?

How about playing the game and earning it on your own instead of paying to walk in someone else’s shoes? I have the same opinion on arena point buying. It’s a bit digusting. I would say that if your 25k (or even 5K) would be better help supporting your existing guild to get through that content (buying consumables and such).

    @Miyuji:

Nether vortices were in the 200-250 range, but since the gem vendor popped the price has gone up a bit, more 250-300. I stayed away from speculating in vortices too much because the market was volatile and I’d been burned once already. However, I’ve just picked up a couple @200 and listed @300. We’ll see if they sell.

As for the epic gems, they were *cheap* the first day when the market was flooded. I was buying Crimson Spinels to upgrade my gear as cheap as 225g, now they’re 400-500g. I’m very cautious about investing in the gem market, but I’d say I make 200-300g a week in gems. I could make more, but I’m nervous about putting such a large percentage of my investment gold into one area of the AH. :)

sid and andrew thank you for your replies,

To Sid: I would love to earn my bear mount, but find it impossible atm. If I wish to stay married and have a good relationship with my wife and daughter my wow time is limited to the occasional 30 min to an hour (it took me 18 played days to reach 70 and almost a year), and I could not ask my guild to raid on a moments notice when I am ready… But perhaps I could support my guilds progression in other ways then have them run me through.

I also do not condone the buying of arena points, more because of the fact that your there to compete, and buying your points is not in the spirit of fair competition. The bear mount however is purely looks it does not make me faster or stronger, it will not make me more competetive in the arena and or battleground system. I already have 5 other epic land mounts and two epic flying mounts.

Dont get me wrong, i am a total nerd. I love wow, I love the ah, and were i single i would have put in the time raiding everything up to the sunwell. But I am not single, I dont have the luxury of free time, I play at 6:15am to 6:30am each day in the time before i go off to work, if I am lucky I might get and hour in at night every other day or so once my daughter has gone to sleep.

Is it wrong for me to want the bear mount? Would you have another suggestion on how I should get it with my time constraints?

P.s. oooh 100k, thats a pretty nice goal, not sure i could do it by the expansion, my server is usually dead last in progression and number of people on server, this i think means less competition, but also less economic activity and a slower growth rate of my capital. I think I ll shoot for it anyway.

  12. Andrew Ferguson Says:

Spots in ZA are usually for sale on different servers, to get your bear mount. On lightbringer it’s about 9,000 gold for a guaranteed bear mount and any other loot you want that happens to drop that run.
