Speedy Scribe: Power level your Inscription in patch 3.0

The inscription powerleveling guide I’ve been working on is finally complete! Naturally, there may be a few mistakes, so I urge you to try the guide on the PTR or once 3.0 goes live. If you find something wrong or you have a better route for a certain portion of the guide, feel free to leave a comment and let me know!

At the moment, it’s pretty pointless to level inscription past 350 as there are no new recipes for 355 and beyond. The only way to learn new recipes after 350 (and the only way to learn minor glyphs) is through Minor Inscription Research, which has a 20 hour cooldown. Below are the materials required to get to 350 inscription. The pigments come from different sets of herbs, which you can see on Wowhead by clicking each pigment’s name. The average return of each herb is about 2.5 pigments per mill (5 herbs), so you’ll need about double the amount of herbs to get the necessary pigments listed below. I plan on having one extra stack of each as a buffer in case of bad luck.

The following uncommon pigments have a chance to be milled from each set of herbs. With the volume of herbs required for the pigments above, you should have no problem getting these pigments.

And finally, the parchment below can be bought from the inscription supplies vendors near every inscription trainer.

  • 60x Light Parchment
  • 121x Common Parchment
  • 155x Heavy Parchment
  • 30x Resilient Parchment

Now that you’ve stuffed your inventory full of materials, let’s plow through this guide. I started out at the Ironforge trainer until 300 Inscription, then moved to Honor Hold to finish up. You’ll need to make a few trips to and from the bank to mill the herbs and use the pigment, but make sure you mill enough Nether Pigment to bring with you to the Outland to get from 300 to 350 inscription.

As I said above, there’s really no point in wasting money to level past 350 unless you need one of the glyphs trainable at 350. There are no trainable recipes past 350 Inscription, so this is a good stopping point. From here on out, make sure you are using your Minor Inscription Research cooldown every 20 hours to discover new minor glyphs. If you have found any errors in the guide while leveling your Inscription, please post a comment below. Thanks!

Have you taken patch 9056 into account yet? It’s recent, and changed a few things…

  2. Kevin says:

Yep, this guide is as up to date as the PTR.

  3. Nick says:

Thanks for this! I’ll put this to use once the patch goes live.

  4. Mgeli says:

    nice job, thank you.

  5. Oleg says:

    Bookmarked. Thank you!

  6. Mike says:

Do you have a material cost average, at least for the vendor stuff you have to get?

  7. Badmax says:

Tyvm For this guide will help lots only one hearp i need to farm to get 350 inscribe :D

  8. Mep says:

Thanks, this guide is going to be very useful :)

  9. Judgebuble says:

Indeed, thank you! Bookmarked and will be used the second the servers go live.

  10. Marc says:

Any idea what sort of prices to set for glyphs?

  11. Glenn says:

This is a good guide, but I will be spreading out what I make a bit more. You get about 3 equal skills most of the times you train, and just making one is kind of a waste. From a bag space issue it is fine, but if you are like me and will have a glyph dump tab or two in the guild vault diversifying your glyph production could be a better choice. Instead of making 10 hunter mark glyphs, consider also making Backstab, Frost Nova, and Power Word: Shield, which take the same mats and skill at the same rate. Spreading out the glyphs you make will allow you to serve more people at a faster rate, thus making you more money, or at least racking up more points with more people in your guild. It’s easyer to find 2 or 3 of each class then 10 on one class.

  12. Aurdon says:

I’d also advise to be on the look out for whenever the Rare pigments provide skillups. Rare pigment does nothing on its own and you’ll be making it into ink sooner or later so keep an eye on that aspect.

Glenn is right as this is one of the most AH friendly grinds out there. You have several glyph options to make at each skill point so don’t just make 10 Hunter glyphs just because they are orange…make a couple of different orange glyphs so that you have a better spread to list on the AH.

I’ve leveled it on the PTR and plan on doing it live tonight.

  13. Kevin says:

    Aurdon,

I considered using the rare pigments as a means of leveling up, but I didn’t want to write the guide based on chance. Though the guide does require some rare pigments, there should be more than enough available from milling to fulfill the guide. But feel free to take advantage of rare pigments if you mill a few extra :)

  14. joggoms says:

Awesome! I’ll be using this today.

Noob question- will there be inscription trainers in all major cities or what? I can’t seem to find them on Wowhead.

  15. Kevin says:

    joggoms,

You’ll have to use the Wrath section of Wowhead.

  16. Flyv says:

Excellent list, works on the official 3.0. Two comments:

The “rare” inks are worth making as soon as you can. They’ll give you some skillpoints here you can’t pick up. But hold off *using* the rare inks until the last minute; they stay yellow longer than most recipes.

295-300 sucks: there’s exactly two Glyphs you can make for skillpoints, and both are green.

  17. Oryx says:

Instead of Glyph of Soulstone, use Glyph of Cleaving, to save 5 ink.

  18. Guntress says:

A tip for that nasty 295-300 grind: find someone else who already has 300+ inscription and get them to make ethereal ink for you. You can mill outlands herbs for the mats at 295 inscription, so all you need to do is hand them a little tip and have them make 5 ethereal ink, then learn scroll of spirit VI and make 5 of them. Beats the heck out of grinding plaguelands herbs for 5 green skill points.

  19. Dunjay says:

I’d like to see a pot-patch comments thread. I myself made over 10,000 gold last night and increased my skill to 365 which is currently the max due to lack of trainable glyphs at high levels. It would be nice to see how everyone else fared last night. The server problems made things interesting, for sure, but I am quite happy with the profit I made, despite the fact that I had to drop 375 mining.

  20. carl says:

    10k?

Your competition must have been slacking, people here are undercutting each other remorselessly. Its better value selling the herbs than the actual glyphs

  21. Eusebian says:

    Awesome guide, thanks so much

  22. Ryan says:

“5x Weapon Vellum II to 250 Inscription”

This doesn’t give skillups at 245.

  23. Semira says:

Thank you SO much for this Guide. I must say, that the only changes I made was to spread out the types of Glyphs I made, so that I could test the market with each one, but the Guide was flawless in giving the right direction. Despite server downs, Kalimdor dropping repeatedly and other issues, I managed to go straight to cap with over 300 auctions up, clearing 2.8k in sales without being aggressive.

Oh, and getting the Glyph of Penguin as my first discovery did not hurt!

  24. Flyv says:

I’m doing OK selling major glyphs, but the real value at the moment is if you get lucky and get a useful minor glyphs. Because of the discovery system minor glyphs are quite rare right now. I’m the only one with Feign Death on my server, and I’m selling a bunch at 100g each. I think I could maybe get more for each one but my volume will go down. I figure I’d rather sell more early while I’m still the only vendor.

  25. Chopstix says:

Fantastic guide. I used this to powerlevel a day after the patch was out. And I did not spend a single gold as I had the minimum amount of herbs to cover it. Many thanks!

  26. Tex says:

I think Flyv has the right idea. My new scribe (a semi-neglected 22 druid) snagged the Pick Pocket glyph as his first discovery. I went to the AH to check Pick Pocket prices… anywhere from 75g to 200g each??? Jackpot!

I posted a few at 50g bid, 60g buyout, one of which already sold. Then I shipped the rest of my entry-level herbs (started with about 40 full stacks to semi-power-level Inscription) to an even more neglected alt, to have *them* skill up Inscription & discover a minor as well! She learned the priest Fortitude glyph, currently going for 25-35g on my server (Skywall, Horde side)

Can’t wait for my minor-research cooldowns to end… it’s gonna be like getting surprise gifts every day — twice XD

  27. Iktomi says:

The guide has proven fantastic - thanks heaps guys.

I would have to second the comment above regarding levelling up on the rare ink. For example, I had several stacks of Blindweed, which yielded quite a few Ruby Pigments. I managed to get about 10-12 skill points making them into Fiery Inks.

Keep checking every 5 skill points to see if each pigment level’s rare ink type is available.

  28. Velithar says:

25x Glyph of Sprint only got me to 297. I added 10 Ink of the Sky to get me to 300.

Thanks for the otherwise smooth ride to 350 tonight. (I knew I was hoarding those herbs on my alts for a reason. Too bad I didn’t want to sell them–the few gaps I plugged from the AH nearly killed me. Yikes!)

  29. Blackthorn says:

    Hi there,

I have made 20k gold on patch day with beeing one of the first with glyphs and herbs on the AH. Sold stacks of Herbs for 200g each. It was so much fun.

So now that the prices are going back due to undercutting inscriptionists, what do you guys think might be the next blockbuster in moneymaking when wotlk is out? mithril / thorium? I think prices of herbs and glyphs might go up again because of old and completely new players just coming back to try out wotlk. Also the deathknight runes might be nice moneymakers. But I think to many people will have their runes up when wotlk hits the stores.

Now, sitting on 20k+ gold is nice, but I want more ;-) So I’d like to invest a little money. Is it a good idea to buy raw epic gems to sell them for more? Especially when there are not too many on the AH. The question is if people spend money on epic gems right before wotlk. What do you think?

  30. mindgem says:

I made 25gold from selling Glyphs on AH up til today.
But I have huge competition and I made some very fatal misstakes.

First of all, there was about 100 inscribers that reach lvl360 at the same time as me, about 1 hour after the servers came online.

I had 3 slots of guild bank filled with all flowers from Peacebloom to Mana thistle and I also had my full character bank with odd herbs.

I put my arse at the UC inscriber trainer and lvled it up just about as this guide told me to so I was very fast to lvlup.
I then quickly put everything up on AH for 19g each.

I sold soo much that first day.

But here’s my super stupid misstake. I sold every flower I got left after lvlup on AH for a very small sum, I figure no one wants the low level glyphs, only the outland ones. But turns out everyone wanted the Minor glyphs which all needed low level flowers.

So i ended up buying back my own flowers for like 500-1000g which I just sold for about 10g :)

Day 3 I lvlup Inscription to lvl75 with my Warrior just to research new Minor glyphs, It was little too late and I didn’t get much off it and most of them I already discovered on the Paladin.

    Bye bye.

  31. frankieb says:

i wondering if there will be epic glyph drop maybe in heroics or something i dont see how one can make alot of money since ppl are undercutting so bad and the discoveries are not so random many ppl getting the same ones. i can make some gold when im the only one to have dicovered someting but as soon as someone els does its over. is it worth sticking it out im at 437/450?
